Tips for travelers against mosquito transmitted chikungunya virus

So far, Haiti has been the Caribbean country with the most recent confirmed outbreak of chikungunya. The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and several other Caribbean islands have seen an increase in the chikungunya virus as well.
So the question is: How do you protect yourself from the spread of the chikungunya virus? If I live in Haiti or just visiting, how do I make sure I don't end up with the virus?
So far Doctors have stated that the most effective means of prevention are protection against contact with the chikungunya disease-carrying mosquitoes and mosquito control. The suggest that people use insect repellents with substances such as DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide. Another way to prevent mosquito bites is to wear bite-proof long sleeves and long pants.
Your clothes also can be treated with pyrethroidsinsect repellent. Also make sure screens on windows and doors are in place to keep the mosquitos out.
