The meeting was organized by the Haitian government to discuss about the miserable situation in which our compatriot and potential foreign citizens are living; who are victims of discriminatory measures and facing the threats of deportation from the Dominican Republic without any national identity. The objective of the meeting was to build an active solidarity footprint in support of our brothers and sisters in destitute.
Around 200 participants, representing many important sections of the society, like churches, the business sectors, unions, employer organizations and universities had attended the meeting on government's invitation. The Prime Minister has also mentioned about the government's intended steps, its continued effort to renegotiate the 1999 repatriation protocol and the gross violation of international norms and conventions of the Dominican authority. Out of the 4 official and 141 unofficial crossing points on the border, the Haitian government has proposed to use two points as point of repatriation-- they are Malpasse and Ouanaminthe.
As per government's contingency plan, the deportees will be received in two stages, (a) identification of migrants and (b) support of expelled. The contingency plan has been based on a calculation to receive 30,000 deportees in about six weeks. They will be accommodated in a sterile area to prevent the risk of spreading infection. The economic experts will be invited to build a revival plan so that the situation can be converted into a means of wealth creation.
