Wyclef Jean and the Fugees

During the mid-190 Wyclef Jean was best known for being a part of the musical group, the Fugees. The group was comprised of Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Jean's cousin as well as fellow Haitian immigrant Prakazrel "Pras" Michel.

During their active years between 1992 and 1997 Wyclef Jean and the Fugees were signed to Ruffhouse Records, a record label started as joint project with Columbia Records.

The group recorded three albums during their active years in the 90's including "Blunted on Reality", "The Score", and "Bootleg Versions". While "Blunted on Reality" and "Bootleg Versions" did well, the most popular was "The Score". This Fugees album reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and U.S. R&B charts, sold over 18 million copies worldwide, and even earned the group two Grammy awards.

Wyclef Jean and the Fugees separated in 1997 when they began solo careers, which was less than a year after their Grammy wins. During this time Wyclef began producing for several artists including Destiny's Child, and delivered his first solo album, The Carnival.

Between 2004 and 2006 the Fugees had a short lived reunion that began with a highly anticipated performance in the movie Dave Chappelle's "Block Party". They also performed at BET's Music Awards in 2005 and went on their first tour as a group since 1997. While it looked like the group was on the path to delivering a new album, it never appeared and the group disbanded once again.

During an interview Pras indicated that most of the problems came from Lauryn Hill. He stated "Me and Clef, we on the same page, but Lauryn Hill is in her zone, and I'm fed up with that s**t. Here she is, blessed with a gift, with the opportunity to rock and give and she's running on some bulls**t? I'm a fan of Lauryn's but I can't respect that."
