The Haiti Renaissance and its Foundation

Haiti, following the 2010 earthquake, has the extraordinary opportunity to rebuild itself and emerge as a modern country, with true development potentials.

The first step in resolving the Haitian endemic under-development and for a stable development with continued increase in the standard of living is by making electrical power available to all regions of Haiti.

Each Haitian household should have access to electrical power.

Why?

Whether Haiti's long-term development is based on tourism, manufacturing, or a knowledge base economy, the availability of electrical power is of the first order.

In today's world, where information and communication are the foundation of the world's developed economies, Haiti economy cannot and will not survive on the basis of agriculture alone.

Whether you want to build houses, recharging cellular telephones, repairing cars, sewing clothes, pumping water, cooking meals (charcoal in no longer acceptable), or the manufacturing of goods, in other words, all aspects of modern life, requires the use of machines and therefore electricity.

The industrial revolution happened almost 200 years ago and yes, it is acceptable and legitimate to use machine power, instead of man power, to complete daily tasks.

This requires the use of electrical power.

It is obvious that for this to happen, the construction of modern roads linking all parts of the country is also a necessity.

In so doing, the development of the principal regions of Haiti will be possible and regional economies will become a source of wealth.

Things will not happen in Port-au-Prince only. Haiti's other major problems, such as access to education, medical care, sanitation are poles of development in themselves and require the electrification of the entire country and the availability of modern roads to access the provinces.

It is strongly hoped that during the next presidential mandate, Michel Joseph Martelly will surround himself with a great team of able men and women, with the will and vision to build modern roads and to make electricity available everywhere.

This would create the necessary foundation for Haiti's future economic and social development.

Haiti would then have turned the page. The democratic foundation for changing governments is now the only road ahead and with "unité fait la force", hopefully Haitians will never look back.

May the force be with Haiti!
