Haiti-Japan Ties Forged With Martelly's Visit

During the visit, the two sides inked a deal meant to improve the agricultural sector in Haiti. Under the agreement, Japan will give Haiti $6.5 million to fund a food aid project aimed at increasing the production of agricultural produce in the country. The grant, which was signed after a meeting between Martelly and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, is expected to improve and ensure food security in Haiti.

At a conference, Martelly underscored the importance of a strong relationship between Haiti and Japan. He said that the Caribbean nation will be rebuilt with the help of the Asian government. Martelly also thanked Japan for its involvement in peacekeeping operations in Haiti, which has reeled from a series of challenges in the past years. Haiti will continue working with Japan in various matters, particularly in health, sanitation, and education, Martelly said. Aside from signing cooperation deals with Japan, Martelly visited the country to encourage it to invest more in Haiti, as well as to facilitate trade and understand its expansion.

Before going to Japan, Martelly had a stopover in New York in United States. There, he thanked Consul General of Haiti in New York Charles Forbin for helping provide a better community for Haitians in the state.
