Reduction in prison sentence, Robert Antoine could go free in January 2013

Antoine's testimony, as a government witness, has aided an extensive probe into the dealings between the Florida telecoms and high-level Haitian functionaries, which has implicated former Haitian president Jean-Bertand Aristide.

Asked about how the Court viewed Antoine's assistance up until now, Kainen said, "My client and his family have been reassured that the government is taking into account Mr. Antoine's generous assistance and cooperation, well before he pled guilty to money laundering. We are confident that the Court will reduce his sentence, since without his help the investigation would have faltered badly."

Eight defendants have been tried and sentenced, as an outcome of the investigation, most notably former telecom CEO Joel Esquenazi, who secured the longest-running prison term, in U.S. jurisprudence, in defiance of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act

Antoine, one-time overseer of Haiti Teleco's international operations, received bribes in excess of $1 million, in return for providing steep discounts in telephone rates and automatic contract renewals, in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Michel Martelly, Felix Bautista and Election Campaign Financing

It is rather ironical that Haiti's president received the coveted Order of Merit of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella from his Dominican counterpart, President Leonel Fernández for exemplary service, while in real sense his involvement in very shoddy and fishy deals was to take the centre stage three days after the proclamation. It now emerges that Martelly's election campaign was partly funded by Felix Bautista, who owns several companies which were awarded reconstruction contracts in a slapdash manner. Martelly is said to have received more than $2.5 million from Bautista, way before he was elected president extending through to his reign as a president.

Are the armed men running all over Haiti really demobilized soldiers?

The worry I have in my heart is more than words can express. I am deeply troubled by something that every Haitian who is protected by the constitution should be fretting about. How is it possible for armed men in new uniforms, so called demobilized soldiers, be running all over Haiti occupying strategic places in this country while we just watch as if there is no imminent security threat?

Poze Pitit!

These men claim to be demobilized soldiers. President Martelly and his government are yet to act, but before he does one or several Haitians could die in cold blood from the shots of firearm.
