Jamaica Takes the Lead on the Sustainable Development Agenda at 70th UN General Assembly. A. J. Nicholson, Jamaica's Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister, attended (along with his delegation) the 70th United Nations General Assembly. On the periphery of the General Assembly session, Minister Nicholson held multi-lateral talks with Foreign Ministers from Botswana, Senegal, the United Arab Emirates, and the Sudan. The goal of the discussions was to fortify relations and advance trade among the participant nations and Jamaica. Beyond discussions with the African and Arab ministers, Nicholson and other Caribbean community members will also meet with Sushma Swaraj, the Foreign Minister of India, in another series of talks.

During the United Nations plenary summit, Nicholson presented the opening policy proposal for taking up a sustainable development agenda beyond 2015 by member nation-states. Numerous goals are targeted at raising the living standards of emerging nations (read Haiti). The sustainable development agenda has been years in the making, beginning with the Millennium Summit held in the year 2000.

Embracing fidelity and purpose the United Nations nation-states have accepted ". . . a 17-goal and 169-target development agenda . . ." with the theme Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development".

Some of the top and urgent goals are to bring a halt to poverty wherever it exists, to stop hunger, provide sanitation systems and clean drinking water. A call-to-action was also made concerning global climate change and its damaging effect on all developed and developing nations.
