Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien International Airports have been modernized with the creation of a new airspace design. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airbus ProSky partnered for the project that puts into place a modern airspace design, with an integrated Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) system and new operating procedures.

Immediately following Haiti's 2010 earthquake the project began. And it was urgent due to the massive damage the quake did to the aviation infrastructure. Air carriers Air France, American Airlines, and JetBlue also came on board to get involved in the airspace redesign concept.

What has made the project so successful is the enthusiastic cooperation between airline pilots and air traffic controllers, who relied on continual communications with each other to create, test, and fine tune the redesign. The result is that the new airspace design is safer and more efficient, with shorter flight times for airlines and air passengers, along with reduction of CO2 emissions.

The airspace project came in on time, and Haitian air traffic controllers praised the new airspace design's operational functionality. The project had the support of the Haitian Office National de L'Aviation Civile (OFNAC), who hires and trains air traffic controllers.

The Americas Regional Vice President for IATA, Peter Cerda, enthused, "We are proud to have contributed to this positive outcome and believe that both air travelers and the airlines that operate in the country will benefit from a safer and more efficient airspace"
