Brazilian Devotion to Train Haitian Troops

Brazil would be sending its military to Haiti to train the military forces on conditions that the forces would not join to form a militia group. Celso Amorim added that he was assured by Jean Rodolphe Joazile that the trained force would be a public one. Amorim said that the Brazilian forces would be training Haitian forces things to do with engineering. This would be helpful to the new Haitian force in forming a good professional and institutional background. Among the courses that the Haitian military would get include military engineering and disaster mitigation. Amorim said that military engineering is helpful in Haiti since the country is prone to natural disasters among them being floods and earthquakes.

Amorim was hopeful that the collaboration of the military would be successful and the participation of Brazil in the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, MUNSTAH would be narrowed down soon. Brazil doubled its troops in 2010 in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that struck the city of Port-au-Prince and the neighboring cities such as Leogane, Jacmel and Petit-Goave.

So far, there are about 2,000 Haitian soldiers in Haiti working under the UN. Amorim said that he did not know how long this mission would take to fruition but his country has been removing its troops from Haiti under the MUNSTA. The Brazilian government started sending its troops in Haiti since 2004 amid stability concerns in Haiti. This process is projected to continue until October 2012.
