In 1802, the United States found out Spain secretly ceded the Louisiana Territory to France. US president Thomas Jefferson felt that was a threat since the produce of three-eighths of the territory must pass through New Orleans to get to market.

After the Haitian revolution, Napoleon felt that France no longer needed to use New Orleans as a port to supply or defend the Caribbean colony. Also the war in Saint-Domingue(Haiti) had taken the live of more than 40,000 French soldiers. A historic deal was struck to sell the Louisiana Territory where the US paid $219 million in today's dollars to France for the acquisition of 828,800 square acres and control of the Mississippi

Haitian Holidays Similar to America's

Haiti celebrates many of the same holidays Americans do, including Fourth of July, Flag Day, All Souls Day, Christopher Columbus, Easter, and Christmas.

The first holiday in Haiti is New Years Day, which lasts an entire week. The largest event of the year, Haitians prepare a feast of ham, turkey stew, black rice, and plantains. Rhum Barbancourt is also consumed. The holiday celebrates Haiti as the first black-led Republic.

Carnival, in early February, mimics Louisiana's Mardi Gras. Both atonement for sins and raucous partying before Lent begins, it is a three-day orgy of dancing, drinking, and parades.

Easter week, or Rara, has activities including politically-motivated performances, parades, and a traditional menu of fish, yams, beans, and rice.

Day of the Dead Celebration in Haiti

The day of the dead might strike the ignorant as a macabre event, especially in Haiti where the November 1st and 2nd celebration is intricately linked with Vodou. But the practice, shared by other countries such as Mexico and Guatemala, with roots as far-reaching into history the Aztec civilization, though called by other names in different locales, is not so much a dark, pagan ritual as a joyous celebration of the life of lost ancestors.

Hundreds of practitioners of the Vodou and Christian persuasion flock cemeteries and light homemade candles, strew flowers, and offer food and alcohol to the spirits Ghede and Baron Samdi. And since Vodou's legalization in 2003, the ceremonies have become more accessible and certainly more attractive to tourists wanting to witness the cultural spectacle.
