Laurent Lamothe Officially In the Race for Presidency of Haiti

Laurent Lamothe, the former Haitian Prime Minister who was forced to resign from his post amid political standoff in last December, has finally submitted his nomination on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, to run for its presidency under the banner of platform Peyizan. He was accompanied by a few hundred supporters who chanted and cheered as he arrived by a motorcade at the port-au-Prince electoral office. This was a much anticipated and to some extent a surprised move (because of his repeated denial) came less than three hours before the Wednesday registration deadline and a day-long of legal scrambling.

Lamothe was the former head of President Michel Martelly's government as well as the Minister of Planning & Foreign Affairs. He was required to submit a discharge certificate from the Superior Court of Auditors and Administrative Disputes (CSCCA) under the electoral law to affirm that he did not misused any government funds. André Michel another presidential candidate from an opposition board JISTIS, has called for the dismissal of Lamothe's application because his decision came out of a political provocation and moreover, he lacks proper clearance. Lamothe has always maintained that he should be allowed to run without a discharge by the CSCCA, because independent auditors have cleared him of financial mismanagement.

In a social media Lamothe has described his decision as an act of democracy and about keeping the country moving forward. It is the people who have given him the power and he cannot remain seated idle in front of the misery, drought and hunger that his countrymen are experiencing every day.

Now, the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) will review the documents filed by Lamothe and place them before the Departmental Electoral Litigation (BCED) and to the Office of the National Electoral Litigation (BCEN) for final approval. However, some critics are of opinion that if his application gets final approval, it may cause drop out of several opposition politicians in protest.
