Haitian Government back off from plan, Strike still on scheduled

Nothing will prevent the strikes scheduled for November 9 and 10 form taking place. On Friday, after a Council of Government the Haitian government had taken the decision to remove previous decision to increase the budget for the fiscal year 2015-2016. Prime Minister Evans Paul during a press stated that the government listens to the population. According to the Prime Minister, we analyzed the current socio-political context and understands the difficult situation of the population. He announced that costs such as fees for driver's license, registration, license plates and passports will remain unchanged. In addition proposed severance pays for certain government officials will not be implemented. The government is hoping that these new decisions would change the mind of the trade unionists who have scheduled the two day strike.

It did not do the desired effect however. The trade unionists are demanding that a new Decree be issued to rescind all previous measures taken by the government in regard to budget for the fiscal year 2015-2016. According to Duclo Benisoit, the strike will go on unless a new Decree is published in the Official Newspaper "Le Monitor" by the government.

Haiti National Police for its part is getting ready to deal with possible violence during these announced strikes. He accused the organizers for sometimes making threats in order for the strikes to be successful. He wants to give the population firm guarantee that they will be present to assure their security
