A New Cement Plant in Haiti, "Siman Lakay"

On December 19, 2015, the foundation stone of a new cement plant "Siman Lakay" has been laid in the "La Pierre" locality of Gonaives. This is the fruit of more than one year's hard work and technical studies by Mr. Bestgen Jérôme, the Honorary Consul of Haiti in Belgium, and it could never be completed without the support of foreign and Haitian investors. The new plant will require an investment of around US$300 million and will be constructed by the Belgian TSE (Techniques Speciales a l' Export NV) construction firm and the multidisciplinary engineering cluster company TPF. The construction of the plant is expected to start on January 13, 2016. This would be the biggest investment in Haiti.

The plant with an annual capacity to produce 2 million tons of cement will feed a major portion of local demand which is estimated around 4.5 million tons per year. The plant site for "Siman Lakay" has been selected in this section of Gonaives (Artibonite) because of its abundant deposits of limestone and marlstone (lime-rich mud), essential for cement production. The plant will create job opportunities for about 2,200 people. A 35-megawatt power plant will be constructed to provide stable electricity for the cement plant and also to a residential colony which would be built nearby for the people working in the plant.

Haiti is a country rich in mineral deposits, particularly, the ingredients which are essential to produce good quality cement. Haitian cements are better, but they are more expensive than cheaper quality Dominican cement. Haiti is blessed with natural limestone. However, so far, lack of cement production capacity and poor infrastructure has prevented it from producing better cement economically. With 'Siman Lakay', Haiti will soon become a great cement manufacturer.
