Haiti is in the dark as Tropical Storm Isaac inflicted damages on EDH equipments

The passage of tropical storm Isaac in Haiti caused a variety of damages. Beside the alarming number of people who perished as well as damage in agriculture, Electricity d'Haiti (EDH) was also a major victim. EDH reported a loss of a total of 230 transformers, 1,200 poles of 40 feet and 1,000 poles of 35 feet. The Losses are estimated at 336 million gourdes.

Electricite d'Haiti has been working tirelessly to restore infrastructures which were completely decimated by tropical storm Isaac. They are expected to continue to work around the clock to move the process forward.

EDH is largely a government owned company providing electricity to about 12.5% of the population; 25% if counting illegal connections. Most of their infrastructure are very old

Current demand for electricity consumption in Haiti is about 60% Residential, 20% Industrial, 15% Transport and 5% Services. EDH has a national capacity that is largely insufficient to meet the demand of the Haitian population.

As a result of ongoing shortage of electricity in Haiti, many families, businesses and iinstitutions (e.g. hospitals, schools) have to rely on their own diesel generators and as a result spend large portions of their income on fuel to run those generators.

It is to bad Haitian people have to go back again in the dark. However, this needs to happen so change can take place.

This black-out has been going on to long and not to mention those illegally steeling over other people's power.

The government needs to privatize this electricity so control can be done by sector.

Everyone needs to pay their share NO MORE ILLEGAL POWER Free RIDE while other are paying for none functional power
