Justin Viard returns to the Haitian Consulate in Montreal

Justin Viard who has developed some popularity among the Haitian community in Montreal was recently removed from his post as Haitian Consulate in Montreal by the Government of Michel Martelly. He has been re-appointed to the position by the new government of Jocelerme Privert.

Justin Viard who has been heading the Haitian consulate in Montreal since 2012 is creditad for facilitating movement of Haitian and Quebec comedians from Montreal to Port-au-Prince and also bringing School of Humor project in Port -au-Prince.

Little Haiti designated an official city neighborhood of Miami

Thursday, May 26, 2016 is a historic day for the Haitian Diaspora. It marks an official recognition of Little Haiti in Miami as a neighborhood. That is after more than 16 years of fighting by community activists to recognize Little Haiti, to put it on the map, and to keep our legacy and history.

In a jam-packed Miami City Hall where several hundred came for support, the commissioners voted unanimously for the creation of legal boundaries for the community in northeast Miami. Members of the Haitian community were had argued that developers were buying property and removing Haitians from the area through gentrification.

Emotional Haitian-born graduating from West Point Military Academy

Here is a Haitian born who couldn't hold his tears as he was graduating from West Point Military Academy. Alix Idrache was born in Haiti. He became second lieutenant in the US Military. This picture was taken during his graduation with 950 classmates and shared with thousands around the world in the social media. As he later explained after seeing the picture, "I was overwhelmed with emotions". He has plan to become a pilot as he will shortly report to FT. Rucker to start flight school.

IDB asking where did the money given for Caracol road go

Wilson Laleau and Jacques Rousseau will have some explaining to do in regard to money given by the Inter-American Development Bank (BID) for the construction of road to access the Caracol region. After visiting the site of the project, BID had estimated that the project is incomplete, was not managed well and sufficient documentation has not been provided to justify the expenses. So far, the explanation provided by Wilson Laleau is unacceptable and the Inter-American Development Bank is actually asking for reimbursement.

You may also want to know that the firm "Agritans" that belongs to Presidential candidate Jovenel Moise was one of the companies that benefited from this project.

Florence Duperval Guillaume signed contract with person dead over 5 Months

Let me start by saying this is not the case of a dead person transformed into a Haitian Zombi although many would think this is possible. Florence Duperval Guillaume who was Haiti Minister of Public Health under the Martelly government had managed to do that. She actually signed one of these lucrative contracts with funds from PetroCaribe with someone who as pronounced dead for over five months earlier and buried. According to Senator Youri Latortue, the person in question died in April; however both his name and signature appeared at the end of a contract along with Minister Florence Duperval Guillaume in September of that same year. Senator Cantave who worked in the Ministry at the time was present at the funeral.

Government Decree to increase minimum wage to 375 gourdes $6.05 a Day

The Decree to increase the minimum wage finally issued by President Jocelerme Privert. Effective May 1, 2016, An employee who works an eight-hour working day for the highest sector will receive a minimum salary of 375 gourdes ($6.05). Previously, it was 240 gourdes ($3.87). The salaries for workers in different sectors such as the industrial, private and service sectors will receive varying increases.

This Decreed was issued following pressure from various workers demanding an increase in the minimum wage to deal with high inflation. Few weeks ago, hundreds of protesters marched through the streets of Port-au-Prince, demanding an increase of 500 gourdes in the minimum wage. In addition, an ongoing strike by various State hospitals has left the population without any access to health care.

Cicilia Laurent passed away at the venerable age 120 years

One of the oldest known Haitians, Cicilia Laurent, doed at the age of 120 years. She died in Montreal, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, many relatives and friends. Cicilia Laurent was born January 31, 1896, and recently celebrated her 120 years at Consulate of Haiti in Montreal. She may have been one of the oldest persons in existence as the Guinness Records was recently doing some research to officially establish her birth record.

No second round election without Jean-Charles Moise

Platfom Pitit Dessalines may not know the names of the two presidential candidates who will be participating in the runoff Presidential election in Haiti; however they are certain of at least one of them. In less than one week before the report of the Commission of Verification, the political platform Pitit Dessalines made it clear that there will be "no second round without Jean-Charles Moïse". In addition, Pitit Dessalines expects the elimination of PHTK candidate Jovenel Moïse from the process, stating if it is proved that a candidate or political group has benefited from fraud, the votes should be annulled.

Jude Celestin at the Funeral of Gazzman Couleur's mother

On Tuestay, May 24, 2016, Presidential candidate Jude Celestin was in Gonaives to participate at the funeral of the mother of his long time supporter Gazzman Couleur. As he was confronted at one point by reporters, he took the opportunity to remind them that Gazzman has been with him since the beginning of his campaign. He also pronounced in regard to the the G8, saying that the group is still in existence and their objective is for the Commission of Verification to bring some light into the previous election.

Six people arrested for the attack in Cayes Police station

The investigation on the attack of the Police Station in the city of Cayes appears to be moving with speed. On Tuesdaym may 24, 2016, six individuals were arrested by the Police, according to Chief Superintendent of the police, Marc André Cadostin. In the meantime, Minister of Justice and Security, Me Camille Edouard Junior, as well as a representative of UN MINUSTAH are expected in Cayes on May 24, 2016.
