In February 2004, an unsuccessful organized rebellion group "Front pour la Libération et la Reconstruction Nationales" (National Revolutionary Front for the Liberation and Reconstruction of Haiti) which is briefly known as 'Revolutionary Artibonite Resistance Front' attempted to declare independence for Artibonite. The rebel group was an alliance between two elements-- gang of anti-government armed people and former soldiers of the disbanded Haitian army. When repeated coups and insurgencies were destabilizing the nation, the economy of this region was moving in downward direction. However, since the election of President René Garcia Préval the region is on a move and production of rice and other corps have increased.
