Botanica Garden or Jardin Botanique of Cayes a Green Reserve

Jardin Botanical Gardens of Les Cayes (JBC) was established in fall 2003. Its goals are replenishing ruined areas of biodiversity throughout Haiti and building infrastructure for maintaining biological legacy of island natural resources. JBC wishes to educate Haitian lawmakers legislating protections for Haiti's plant- and animal-life biodiversity is good for the future of eco-tourism, and for the country's morale.

The non-government organization, Botanical Gardens in Conservation (BGCI), works in tandem with JBC to set standards for creating, implementing, and sustaining botanical gardens and arboretums globally. They have defined markers that determine if a green space is a botanical garden, as opposed to civic or decorative parks.

Jacques Nicolas Léger

Jacques Nicolas Léger was born in 1859 in Les Cayes, Haiti. He was a diplomat, a politician and a Haitian lawyer. Though his early education was in Republic of Haiti, he was sent to Paris at a very young age where he received his legal training and higher education. His father was a notable statesman and a Haitian Senate member and as a result, Léger got a chance to actively participate in Haitian politics at a very early age. When he was only 22 years old, he became Haitian Legation's secretary in Paris and soon after the sudden resignation by Minister Charles Séguy Villevaleix, Jacques Nicolas Léger became charge d'affaires.

Fete Champetre, Major Cultural Event in Haiti

Tourism has been on a substantial descent over the last 20 years. But one series of events, the Fête champêtre, continues to give hope to a struggling industry as tourists, local, from the Diaspora, and international, flock Haiti to witness the countryside festival.

One of the main avenues for entertainment to the 18th century elite, a Fête champêtre (a country feast or pastoral festival) was a type of garden party much loved at court. With pretensions to simplicity, the Fête champêtre was patronized by the well dressed, entertained by musicians hidden in the trees, as they enjoyed the beauty of landscaped park.

1843 Constitution of Haiti

Charles Riviere-Herard seized power as Haiti's 5th president in 1843, after staging a coup. His reason was the amended 1843 Constitution, passed without his knowledge. Hérard ruled for one year, plagued by two civil uprisings, and failure to repossess the Dominican Republic (DR) as part of Haiti's empire.

During the battle to re-establish Haitian rule over the DR, insurgents were gathering in rural Les Cayes. Known as the Army of the South, they fought to capture Port-au-Prince in a coup attempt. But they did not succeed. In the meantime, another uprising was fomenting in northern Haiti, incited by opposition to Charles Riviere-Herard's government. Confronted with the latest effort to unseat him from office, he tried to maintain control by breaking up Parliament and banning the amended 1843 Constitution. After dissolution of his government, he fled from office and exiled himself to Jamaica where his life ended.

Huge Development and Tourism Plans for Ile a Vache, Haiti

Most of the recent developmental agendas relating to Haiti pointed out to one common aspect - tourism. Haiti is blessed with Ile a Vache island located off Les Cayes' southeast coat. Spanning over an area of 52 sq. km. this island, as mentioned by Tourism Ministry, is the final frontier of true Caribbean treasure. The Ministry of Tourism is aiming towards developing a sustainable tourism industry in Ile a Vache that will help to improve the standard of living for the locals and at the same time, open doors for cross-border tourism.

The aim of the Ministry of Tourism is to create a low-density development focusing on eco-tourism while highlighting areas like history, agro-tourism and cultural heritage that will cover 20 beaches that are mostly deserted. The plan also includes solar-powered electricity-run vehicles instead of regular cars. The Ministry plans on attracting investors from countries like wider Caribbean, China, Qatar and Dominican Republic.

The power of Radio in the Haitian Society

Haitian radio is the chief means of media communication on the island. Few have income to buy a TV, and those who have sets are subject to unreliable electricity service. Going online to access news coverage is impossible for all but the rich. Not only is newspaper distribution minimal, but 80% of the population are illiterate. The only information source available to everyone is the radio and radio stations are plentiful in Haiti. Reception is widely accessible in virtually every village on the island. Radios cost little to own and run on batteries.

Les Cayes Tourism School To Open

Haiti has taken another step forward to boost the country's tourism industry. In a bid to improve the quality of the country's tourism services, the Ministry of Tourism is all set to open a training school in Les Cayes. The Hotel and Tourism Training Institute was established to train and hone the skills of only 60 students. Under the program, the students will be taught and trained by professionals who will be recruited from Les Cayes and from the Hotel School of Port-au-Prince.

Students can now enroll as the admission period will last until February 15. The training school will offer various subjects and programs involving the reception and accommodation of tourists, as well as housekeeping and bar services. The program is meant to enhance the skills of Haiti students in order to provide the best of services to tourists.

Les Cayes A Beautiful Town In Haiti

Les Cayes is a beautiful town located in southwest Haiti. It is the capital of the Sud Department and is situated on the Caribbean coast near the Ravine du Sud River. It is located southwest of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, at a distance of 196 km. It has six communes including Torbeck, Les Cayes, Maincihe, Camp-Perrin, Île à Vache and Chantal.

Since the other cays and small Île à Vache island are located near by, the town was given the name Aux Cayes, which means 'On the Cays'. Even now the old name is kept, besides the new name Les Cayes.

Les Cayes Antoine-Simon Airport to Open South Region to Tourism

As part of a comprehensive initiative to bring more of the tourist trade to Haiti, Estrella contractors are building an annex to the Antoine-Simon Airport. Estrella, a Dominican Republic construction firm, will erect both a new terminal as well as a 3,000-meter airstrip. The government of Haiti (GOH) has commissioned the project to attract more tourism to the South Department.

On February 1, 2013, Haitian Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, placed the cornerstone of the terminal at a ground-breaking ceremony at Antoine-Simon Airport attended by representatives of the Les Cayes Mayor's Office, along with other government officials. In his remarks, Lamothe spoke of the GOH's wisdom in viewing the Haitian tourist industry as among the "promising sectors" for continued infrastructure development in the country. He added investing in Les Cayes with this expansion project will help the Haitian tourism industry produce many thousands of fresh jobs in the South Department.

Haiti 2013 National Carnival is set for Cap-Haitian

The dates and the place for the next Carnival in Haiti has been scheduled. It will take place on February 10, 11 and 12 in the historic Haitian city of Cap-Haitian. Ms. Elza Beaussan who is at the head of the delegation visited Cap-Haitian on December 18, 2012 to begin the preparation for this big event.

After the city of Les Cayes last year, now it is the turn of Cap-Haitian to host the biggest event of the year which is the Carnival. This is part of the decentralization plan for the current government as they are using this annual event to help discover the entire country of Haiti
