Haiti Winning the Fight against HIV/ AIDS

Treatment numbers for HIV/ AIDS have also risen dramatically within the past year, with an unprecedented 44% increase in 2013. The treatment rate for the past decade has shown, on average, 20% increase annually, the exception 2010, when the earthquake jolted the island.

Several international agencies have funded prevention, care, and treatment programs. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) administers drug treatments, birth control, and education programs, under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched a field office in Haiti in 2002, to aid the government of Haiti in forestalling HIV virus transmission. Most importantly, the CDC funds the proliferation of programs to stop mother-to-child transmission. In those mothers and newborns already HIV-infected, the CDC requires stringent compliance to a complete delivery service of care and treatment services.

John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, credits PEPFAR with beating back ". . . a disease that at one time seemed to be unstoppable . . ." And it has never been more true than in Haiti.
