VERITE No Longer Participating in Elections

VERITE political party has made the hard decision not to press forward for the second round of voting on October 25th. During the first round of voting back in August it was the victim of purposeful and vicious attacks at its polling stations throughout Haiti. No one knows if VERITE's bowing out of the election will bring more violence during the second round. The pull-out, some believe, will destabilize the island.

VERITE is an intimidating political force to Tet Kale, President Martelly's party. And it is suspected Tet Kale may have been behind the violence on Election Day. VERITE has also sustained a blow regarding its participation in the presidential elections. The corrupt Provisional Electoral Council ignored a Court of Auditors ruling, which said VERITE's candidate for president, Jacky Lumarque, did not need a discharge certificate, because he never handled any public funds as a government official. Front runner, Lumarque, also poses a threat to Tet Kale's candidate, Jovenel Moise. So the PEC has decided, in defiance of the high court ruling, to keep Lumarque from running.

In some districts, during the legislative elections held on August 9, the percentage of polling was reported to be less than the expectation; two people were killed amid violence, fourteen candidates who ran in the Haiti's first-round legislative elections were disqualified by the state election officials following violent disturbances at voting stations. However, the Organization of American States (OAS) who is actively watching and monitoring the election had said that the irregularities were not enough to invalidate the overall results.

John Kerry came to Haiti to assure the holding of October 25 elections

Secretary of State John Kerry came to Haiti on Tuesday to delver a message he hopes will carry all the way to the October 25, 2015. He is hoping for a "smoother process" than what took place in August.

According to Secretary of State John Kerry, "Haiti needs governing institutions that are legitimate and representative, and those cannot come into being without free and fair elections that take part without intimidation or without violence"

Several things became clear with the arrival of the Secretary of State John Kerry in Haiti. For one we now know for a fact the election will take place on October 25. If anyone had some doubts in the past that it may not happen, I would advise you to remove that from your mind. Second, the transfer of power will take place on February 7 of next year. President Michel Martelly once again reiterated that fact for anyone who may have missed it.

Nehemy Joseph, not comfortable with CEP, resigns

It appears that the recent attacks and accusations that have been mounting against Haiti Provisional Electoral Council(CEP) are having some effects. One of its members, Néhémy Joseph, realized that this is no longer an environment for him to work as he handed his resignation letter to President Michel Martelly.

A copy of the resignation letter is included. In his three page letter addressed to the President, Mr. Néhémy Joseph referred to the ongoing criticisms against the CEP stating that the country needs inclusive and impartial election

Jean Chavannes Jeune, Candidate for President of Protestant Sector

On August 9, 2015, the selection of former journalist Clarens Renois by the High Level Commission (on September 2) as the sole candidate for the Protestant sector in Haiti to run for the presidency was questioned by a group of pastors, church and mission leaders on the ground of his contribution and Christian commitment towards the Protestant community.

The dissatisfied Haitian Protestant Federation (FPH), the representative body of the Haitian community, instead, has nominated Pastor Chavannes Jeune out of nine aspiring candidates with 95% favoring supports. Pastor Chavannes Jeune will run for the presidency under the banner of CANAAN. Thus, Clarens Renois and Chavannes Jeune will represent two divisions of the Protestant sector as "single" Protestant Presidential Candidate".
